Opening Weekend of Fishing Season 2016

The Opening Weekend of the 2016 Season was a huge success this past weekend with lots of Anglers in the area and lots of big fish being caught.  The avid angler was out on the water at 5:01 am as the legal start time for fishing was kicked off Saturday morning.  As usual, it was a cold, frigid, snowy morning as a nice storm dropped about 2-3″ of fresh snow on the ground Friday night late in the evening.  The weather never stops the opening weekend crowd though, as it was a busy morning on Silver Lake.  Those that braved the cold and snow were rewarded with some amazing fishing and the beauty that the Eastern Sierra offers in its beauty and amazing views.  As light began to show itself around 6:30am the big Monster trout started to show themselves as we had the largest Rainbow of the weekend brought in at that time.  This Monster weighed in at a massive 8 pound 13 ounces caught by Debbie Denler of Ontario who was fishing from a boat on Silver Lake using a good old fashioned Worm when she hooked into her Monster Rainbow.  About ten minutes before Debbie hooked into her Rainbow Lisa Boaz of Adelanto brought in her Monster Rainbow weighing in at 7 pounds 2 ounces caught from a boat using a Rooster Tail.  It seemed early in the day that the lady anglers were going to shut out the men but the men anglers made a great come back as Don VanHouten of Rancho Cucamonga brought in a nice 7 pound 9 oz Rainbow caught trolling a Fire Tiger Lure and Eddie Pole of Porter Ranch hauled in a 7 pound 10 ounce Rainbow he caught on a Z Ray Lure.  Throughout the day we continued to see larger rainbows being caught on the lake ranging in size from 7 pounds to 2 pounds.  While it was a great morning for larger fish we never seemed to see a lot of stringers being brought in as the bite seemed to be a little slower in the quantity range.  Rush Creek was also a little slower but still produced some nice size Rainbows as Josh Wheeler of Alta Loma brought in a nice 2 pound 2 oz Rainbow and Devin Smith of Huntington Beach brought in a nice 1 pound 12 oz Rainbow he caught down on Rush using a worm.  While the overall bite was slow throughout the region, the quality of fish caught made the 2016 Opening Weekend a huge success.  Look for the bite to continue to improve as the water temperature continues to slowly warm.  The Silver Lake water temperature is sitting around 44-45 degrees, watch for the fishing to improve as that temperature gets closer to 48-50 degrees and the fish become more active.  Silver Lake did receive a 400 pound load of Desert Springs fish stocked last Thursday by Mono County and will also receive another load of Desert Springs 3 to 5 pounders the week of May 15.

If you didn’t make it up for the 2016 Opening Weekend we hope to see you throughout the summer here at Silver Lake Resort as we will be celebrating the 100th Year Silver Lake Resort has been in business to provide a enjoyable and hospitable vacation for you, your family and friends.

See You at The Lake!!!

Fish of the Week:

Debbie Denler of Ontario had the catch of the week when she hauled in this enormous 8 pound 13 ounce Rainbow caught fishing on Silver Lake using a good old fashioned worm.  Congrats to Debbie as here  Monster Rainbow was the biggest fish caught out of Silver Lake over the weekend and was the third biggest caught in the entire Loop behind the 9 pound 1 ounce and 8 pounds 15 ounce Rainbows caught in Gull Lake over the weekend.  Great job Debbie!!!!
